Women 19 and Older Form Bands, Learnto Play Instruments, Write Songs and Play a Show at Schubas in Just Three Days
(April 9, 2010) – In a world wherewomen are often music’s objects of desire Girls Rock! (GR!C) encourages women and girls topick up those guitars and shred just as hard as their male counterparts.
“There isstill a severe lack of women in the music industry, specifically the mainstreammusic industry. Those of us that play in bands can all recount stories of beingtalked down to at music stores, at shows and by other musicians,” said HeatherLember, a founder and program director of GR!C. “We hope that by giving moreand more women the tools and knowledge to participate in the music industry wecan combat this.”
Enter: LadiesRock Camp.
Modeled afterthe Girls Rock! Chicago Summer Camp for girls ages 9 to 16, Ladies Rock Campparticipants learn an instrument (guitar, bass or drums), write an originalsong, and perform it at a rock venue – in just three days. An all-female staff tailorscampers’ rock experiences to any level player – no experience is necessary – fromthe college grad who hasn’t picked up her guitar in a decade to the mom who’salways wanted to play the drums but never knew where to start.
Attendees ofLadies Rock Camp 2009 gave rave reviews of the program, some calling it a life-changingexperience.
Jill Revivo,a graduate of Ladies Rock Camp, spoke of “total free self-expression, all-female energy, awesome music, humor andgreat instruction.” She said, “I got to be number one for a whole weekend. I would go to LRC every year if Icould.”
“Ladies RockCamp strives to be an encouraging, supportive and safe space for women toexpress themselves musically, and to meet other like-minded women,” saidLember. “Women who have never played an instrument leave camp with the skills, knowledge and confidence to further pursue music.”
